5 Bodies, 5 Dimensions to Unlock Your Potential

Get to know your 5 bodies: physical, emotional, mental, spiritual, and energy. They're where your personal, inner, and spiritual growth begins.

When you start out on a path of personal growth, your first steps are usually all over the place. A huge world opens up in front of you, and you have no idea where to start. It can even feel overwhelming. The steps ahead look that big!

That's the first problem.

Then you commit to one path. And you find out it isn't always easy to step off it. The mentors and teachers you meet often swear by that one approach. Everything else? Let's just say it belongs in the trash. Their way is THE best way, no question. You respect that. But you also want to see further. And that's where you hit a wall. The silos are too thick. There are no bridges between disciplines. If there are, good luck finding them. So you try a little of everything, sampling one alternative after another. It's like hiking blindfolded on trails you've never walked. It's slow, it's hit-or-miss, and it doesn't get you very far.

That's the second problem.

Personally, I often wished someone would sit me down and explain what I'm about to share with you. I never got that lucky. I had to find my own way, feeling around in the dark with a walking stick in my hand.

Yet having a map of the paths to unlocking your potential matters enormously. It shows you where to look, where you stand, and what to do first. It opens up new perspectives. It helps you see that the world of possibilities is vast, but it has been mapped. And it lowers your risk. Because let's be honest: on the road to growth and personal transformation, there are incredible discoveries to make. There are also some big, painful traps to avoid.

So if you're into unlocking your potential, or what's also called inner development (same thing), this article is for you. It gives you a clear framework so you can see where you're going.

I wish I'd had this when I started…

How your body is the gateway to developing your potential

Every experience we have on this earth is a sensory experience. Everything goes through the filter of our five senses. So everything is a bodily experience.

Cut yourself off from your body and you cut yourself off from reality. If you can't communicate with your body, you can't communicate with the world.

If you want to unlock your potential, here's the first thing to understand. You need to build a close, harmonious relationship with your body.

How?

By listening to it. Through your five senses. They're the five doorways to a dialogue with your bodies, and with the world around you.

That idea carries a lot of weight. The moment you take it seriously, you realize how much depth there is in the information flowing through those five senses.

And what exactly are you “listening” to?

Sensations. They're the language of the body. You can perceive them, understand them, and analyze them with your head.

That's the first big realization. Waking up to new potential starts with learning to listen to your sensations. And that starts with learning to listen to your five senses.

Discover the 5 bodies: far more than your physical body, they're the key to unlocking your potential

And this has nothing to do with the five senses. Each body has its own intelligence. And each one holds a bottomless supply of potential, ready for you to use.

  • Let's start with the first body. It's the best known and the most obvious. It's also the one that leads to all the others, because everything goes through it. This is the physical body. Why does everything go through it? Because sensations, however deep or subtle, are physical sensations. Its intelligence, physical intelligence, is what lets you use your body with agility, coordination, harmony, and balance.
  • Next comes the emotional body. This is the realm of emotions. This body gives you very strong sensations. They're intense and fairly localized. But they're not pinpoint like those of the physical body, where pain shows up in one precise spot. Emotions cover whole areas of the body. Sometimes they settle in one exact place. Most of the time, though, they spread across larger or smaller zones. And sometimes they move around. Its intelligence, emotional intelligence, lets you know your emotions intimately and channel them. It helps you act when the emotional stakes are high, build strong relationships, and put the energy of your emotions to work.
  • The third body is the mental body. This is the realm of the intellect, abstract thinking, logical reasoning, memory, and focus. In short, all the cognitive abilities of the prefrontal cortex, our conscious, analytical brain. It's much more subtle than the first two. But it takes up a lot of room in our heads. Sometimes so much that it gets intrusive. We're not always in charge of our thoughts! Its intelligence, rational intelligence, covers memory, intellect, abstract thought, culture, calculation, philosophy, and the influence of conscious, unconscious, and subconscious thinking in the broadest sense.
  • The fourth body is the spiritual body. Many people would lump it in with the powers of the brain, and so with the mental body. That's actually the scientific view. But we part ways with it, for a practical reason. Keeping the spiritual body separate from the mental body keeps us out of the “it's all in your head” trap, the “left brain runs everything” trap. It opens us up to a vast world of possibilities that often goes beyond what the rational brain can grasp. Intuition is a great example. Any intuitive person knows it's a kind of intelligence that doesn't go through the head. Your body “knows,” and it tells you through a sensation. Intuitive people have learned that this sensation is always right. But where does it come from? Not from the mind, that's for sure. It comes from the spiritual body. Separating it from the mental body forces us to accept something. There's another pathway in our brain, one that can open doors the head alone never could. And what's behind those doors is truly extraordinary! Its intelligence, spiritual intelligence, lets you connect with realms beyond the mind and “download” useful information through channels of inspiration. [lien interne ARTICLE ].
  • The fifth body is the energy body. We're warm-blooded mammals. Every cell in your body holds 1.5 volts. That's the same as an AA battery, the kind that powered your Walkman (a nod to my generation, and to the young crowd who love all things vintage). The idea that energy flows through the body is nothing new. We're also walking magnetic fields. Add to that the fact that we're conscious beings, and that our thoughts are electromagnetic phenomena too. The result: your energy body is both a huge energy reservoir and an antenna that sends and receives. You can fill up the reservoir to feel fully charged. And you can use your energy to communicate with the world. Have you ever met someone with a certain “je ne sais quoi” that inspired you? That was their energy body, and the story it was telling you. Its intelligence, energetic intelligence, lets you sense, read, influence, and communicate with energy.

To each their own: tapping your unique potential to thrive

We all tend to prefer one body, or a few, over the others. I call them “gateways.” Some may not speak to you at all. That's fine. It just means the dimensions they hold aren't for you yet. Set them aside for now. Just remember that you once read they exist. Someday that could come back and serve you, when you're ready to welcome that dimension of yourself into your life.

There's no need to “force yourself” down paths that don't call to you. To each their own, and to each their own path. Yours belongs to you alone.

Potential and transformation: how do you grow from one gateway to the next?

The idea of a “gateway” is useful. It defines the path you can take to start discovering your potential. And it stacks the odds in favor of enjoying the journey. Say you love sports, and you pick the physical body because that's the gateway that speaks to you most. For you, potential will be a physical, physiological adventure first and foremost.

Your body is like a palace out of the Arabian Nights (clearly, I'm in love with this image today). Stunning, vast, extraordinary. Like any palace, it has lots of doors. But no matter how many doors a palace has, you can only walk in through one at a time! Of course, nothing stops you from using a different one the next day.

Unlocking your potential works the same way. You can enter the palace through the same door every time, or you can mix it up. But it will always be one door at a time.

Whatever you do, whichever door you choose, practice will show you that every door eventually leads to the others. Let's go back to our athlete. You pick the physical body as your gateway. For the sake of the example, let's call it the palace's south door. You wander through the halls (your potential) and explore them. Sooner or later, you'll reach the opposite wing, the north wing. There you'll find another door, say the one to the mental body. It leads to new potential and new discoveries. After all, you can train your body all you want, and your mind can still trip you up. Along the way, you realize the same goes for every other body. Each one plays its own part in your well-being, health, fulfillment, and performance.

As you move from door to door, you can only claim to know your inner palace once you've walked through them all. And the wisest, most experienced people in the field say one lifetime isn't enough to see the whole place!

Isn't that amazing? A whole lifetime of discovering buried treasure!

The traps to avoid as you unlock your full potential

The traps deserve an article of their own (or a whole series). To keep it short, we'll just cover the most important ones, and the most dangerous.

  • Physical body: the main trap is cutting yourself off from your sensations. How many people feel nothing below the neck? The other trap is a conflicted relationship with your body, one where you end up mistreating it.
  • Emotional body: the first trap is putting a lid on it. You lock your emotions in an airtight jar so you don't have to feel the pain. It's like sealing a pressure cooker and leaving it on the stove. Sooner or later, it blows. The other trap, sadly very common, is rushing to open your heart. People forget that each opening often comes with an emotional cleanup of painful memories. Every opening is incredibly beautiful. But as the saying goes, “After the ecstasy, the laundry!” It comes with the territory. Rushing to open your heart can be hard to handle. Gentleness and patience are your best allies here.
  • Mental body: the main trap here is certainty, and the blinders that come with it. Then there's a classic: wanting to understand everything, analyze everything, and building up expectations. All that does is lock you inside your head. You miss the experience you're meant to have. Some people fall so deep into this trap that they build an entirely imaginary journey from scratch.
  • Spiritual body: the main trap is dabbling in everything without top-tier guidance. The spiritual realms are unfathomably deep, and there are traps around every corner. Don't venture in without quality support, or you could regret it. The other big trap is mistaking a spiritual path for a thrill ride. Many people wrongly measure their “level” of awakening by the number of intense sensory experiences they've had (which they call “spiritual experiences”). Those experiences are part of the path. They are not the path. That would be like going to school to collect gold stars and claiming your total qualifies you to graduate. There's one danger in particular you need to know about, because playing in this minefield is sadly all the rage: opening the third eye and activating the pineal gland. This is a very advanced practice. It requires methodical, gradual preparation. That preparation takes time and can't be rushed. You can't wing it, either. A poorly controlled activation of the pineal gland can land you straight in a psychiatric ward. I'm not joking. Don't just do whatever you please without proven expertise and wise, seasoned guidance from someone qualified.
  • Energy body: just like with the spiritual body, don't play sorcerer's apprentice, or you may bitterly regret it. Learn from a trusted, qualified professional, and let them guide you. Bad practice can create all kinds of energy imbalances. Those can snowball into physical, emotional, mental, or psychological problems. Energy is very powerful. Playing with it when you don't understand it is like handing a Ferrari to someone who's never had a driver's license.

Unlock your potential and open the door to a new adventure

Now it's your move!

Choose your “gateway” and start pulling the thread. You'll have a hard time believing so much treasure could be hiding inside you!

You're starting one of the greatest discoveries of your life: you!

Don't confuse “personal development” with “inner development” (or unlocking your potential).

  • Personal development is about discovering who you are. It looks at how you were shaped: your journey, your story, your beliefs, your patterns, your strengths, your vulnerabilities… In short, everything that makes up your personality. Plenty of methods can help you define yourself and grow in this area: the Process Communication Model, the Enneagram, Transactional Analysis, DISC, MBTI… The list goes on. These tools sort you into certain categories. You understand yourself better, and you can work on the patterns that shape you. With the Enneagram, for example, you learn that you're a Type 6 (or a 9, or a 5, or something else). Your friend might be a 3 and your partner a 5. Each of you has your own traits. You get to know yourselves better, and you grow through that work.
  • Inner development is about unlocking your potential. And that potential is the same for every human being on the planet. Whatever your personality, the exercises are the same for everyone. So are the possible results. When it comes to unlocking your potential, everyone starts on a level playing field, regardless of personality, gender, background, culture, or faith. Once a potential is awakened, though, how you use it will depend on how all those things shape you.
  • Beyond personal development and inner development, there's also spiritual development. That's a path of awakening consciousness and transcendence.

Far too often, all three paths get thrown together into one catch-all bag that people wrongly call “personal development.”
