Do you know that feeling of drifting? That “something” missing that you can’t quite name? You want to contribute. You want to make an impact. But where do you start? And once you get going, the path zigzags. It’s full of obstacles and dead ends. Why is it so hard to find where you belong? The answer fits in a few pages. You’re about to discover the Impact Leader Matrix, and everything will finally click. You’ll know exactly where you stand, and how far you still have to go…

THE TWO MOST IMPORTANT DAYS IN YOUR LIFE ARE THE DAY YOU ARE BORN AND THE DAY YOU FIND OUT WHY. – MARK TWAIN

Why courage sits at the heart of impact leadership

Getting aligned isn’t easy. Nothing out there is designed to make it easier. And since there’s no clear map and no GPS, the traps are everywhere.

Spirituality, personal growth, performance, commitment, doing your part, values, self-interest, spending, investing, volunteering, direction, hitting your numbers, revenue… It all blurs together in a fog of uncertainty. Seeing clearly is hard. It takes real courage to stay committed to living in alignment.

The moment you start asking what your place in the world is, impact shows up on its own. And once you look it straight in the eye, you can’t turn away. You know. It’s there. If you do nothing, the inner conflict begins… So how do you get clarity?

Impact leadership: a powerful matrix for leading with purpose

Every leader on a path of impact and contribution has been here. Call it CSR, sustainability, ESG, a purpose-driven company, regenerative business, ikigai, or whatever you like.

We went through it too. So we had to stop, make sense of the journey and put words to it. How could we run Konxus, a media company about living and working with awareness, without a clear GPS to guide our audience? And how could we help every employee, mentor, contributor, client and audience member find their place and feel like they can fly? Growth and contribution are the core of how we lead. But they only matter if they inspire and engage people!

That’s how this matrix was born. The result? Powerful. A true game changer, in our lives and in our company… Here’s what’s inside.

The Impact Leader Matrix: impact and awareness as the two core axes

Wanting to make an impact, do your part or leave a legacy isn’t enough. Meeting that need means asking yourself a lot of hard questions. It means doing the inner work. It’s a path of awareness. It helps you know yourself better. It helps you understand yourself, other people, and the world you live and act in.

Let’s talk about impact

Impact starts with “I.” With “me.” From the day you’re born to the day you die, the only constant presence in your life is you. So let’s drop the labels. Taking care of yourself isn’t selfish. It isn’t self-centered, ego-driven or narcissistic. It’s taking care of the foundation of your whole life, the ground everything else stands on. Without a solid foundation, forget (all) the rest…

To stay clear of those labels, you need to aim for an impact bigger than yourself and your own interests. That’s when you start questioning your place in your community: all the people who make up your social life. It’s the first step your awareness takes toward your place in the world. But it’s only a middle step. There’s something bigger: your World.

Let’s clear up one more idea. “The” world isn’t “your” world. Each of us has our own world. Two people sitting side by side at the same table can live in completely opposite ones. Nobody changes “the” world without first having a strong, lasting impact on “their” world. In fact, it’s that commitment to repeated impact that makes your world grow. Sometimes it grows so much that it starts to overlap with the wider World.

Put simply: before you take on massive, heroic missions that may be beyond you, start acting on your own world. Grow it at your own scale.

These three stages are a natural process of opening up to life. It’s a path of awareness that focuses on what happens outside of you.

Building self-awareness for impact leadership

Opening up to others and to the world forces you to question yourself. That’s a second path of awareness, one that focuses on what happens inside you.

The dominance of materialist thinking is one of the main sources of our blind spots. We were all educated in that mindset. Many of us grew up in secular and/or strictly rational environments. They pulled us away from inner questions and from anything transcendent. But just because science can’t explain consciousness doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist… Yet we act as if it didn’t. This is where the other path begins. It takes you from matter to spirit, and toward a healthy, symbiotic balance between the two.

The moment you ask “why,” you start an existential quest. And if you accept the idea of a purpose, that quest becomes spiritual. For the skeptics out there: this kind of spirituality works just fine with atheism and a secular outlook.

Self-inquiry moves you up a ladder that takes you out of not knowing. Not ignorance as in lack of intelligence. Ignorance as in simply not knowing yet.

You grow through three levels, and each one leads naturally to the next. It starts with Personal Development: your personality, your story, how you were shaped, where you come from, your beliefs. Then comes Inner Development: awakening your potential. It ends with Spiritual Development: meaning, spirituality, transcendence, your essence. You’ll need to cut through the noisy, catch-all mess around personal development and spirituality. Otherwise, it’s just one more way to wander in the dark.

The further you go on this path of awareness, the more you grasp how vast you are. You see your abilities, and the impact life has on you… And the impact you can have on it.

The loop is closed. Awareness and Impact are the two axes your leadership will grow on if you want to make a difference.

Getting out of the red zone: finding balance in the Impact Leader Matrix

Materialism has real strengths: it’s practical. Its weakness shows up when it rejects whatever it doesn’t know or can’t explain. Staying locked inside the “known” creates a zone of discomfort. Many leaders live there. They’re looking for impact, and for that “something” they can’t quite name. Why? Because they’re looking for answers in the material world, and those answers live somewhere else. That’s why you feel like you’re going in circles, spinning your wheels, or looking for a needle in a haystack.

At this point, the material world becomes a trap. You lose meaning and motivation. You feel drained, burned out, empty…

Stuck in the material world, you’ll find:

  • “wolves,” focused on themselves and their own interests.
  • “politicians,” focused on their material influence within their community.
  • “fighters,” focused on the drive to make things change.

Their level of awareness is at rock bottom. You’re something else… But what?

Reaching new heights: the way out is up with the Impact Leader Matrix

The answer to your questions isn’t around you. It’s above you. Starting from the material, you’ll discover the intangible. That’s the value of things you can’t touch but can’t deny either, like skills and leadership. The intangible sharpens your perception. That opens you to the subtle: what can’t be explained but can be felt. And the subtle leads you to the spiritual: what guides you and speaks to you. It’s a journey upward. You discover the whole of who you are. It’s a huge journey, and the blinders come off.

That’s when it hits you. How did I live so long without this? How do we, as human beings, miss out on something this rich? Everything makes sense. It all becomes crystal clear. You no longer want impact to leave a legacy. You want it to help build a world that can be better for everyone. You know it can, because you’ve experienced it. If only we looked up…

Wandering and wrong turns: how the Impact Leader Matrix points you to the right path

But that awakening isn’t enough… Without a guide or a GPS, you’re moving blind. In the red zone, nobody takes you seriously. You’re alone. The wandering begins. You have a million questions. Few people to share them with. Even fewer who can help you find answers. Which way now?

If you follow advice from the red zone, the only voices that sound clear, you’ll hit a wall. Because another red zone is waiting for you, where awareness and suffering go hand in hand. It’s the world of:

  • influencers: slaves to other people’s attention (whatever the cost).
  • gurus: who exploit people’s need for spirituality and meaning to control them (and empty their wallets along the way).

The only way out is the diagonal: becoming a Lighthouse. But finding it is a path full of obstacles.

Shine and make an impact: transformational leadership

When the path of awareness meets the path of impact in a rising, dynamic spiral (shown by the diagonal), you become a Guiding Lighthouse. From then on, your one obsession is how far your beam reaches. That’s when the spiral really takes shape and keeps evolving. The material world reminds you that without it, you’re nothing. You’re back at square one, but on a higher level. Matter and Awareness meet again, and the world will never be the same.

Your inner alignment is consistent and authentic. Combined with your actions in the world, it impacts every life around you. You don’t just meet a need. You change people’s lives. You become a guide, respected and worthy of respect, because you’ve touched what matters most in the people around you: their body (results in the material world), their heart (results in the subtle) and their spirit (spiritual results). You are an impact leader. Every morning when you get up, rain or shine, you know you’re exactly where you belong. Because this is what you came here to do.
